31 Mar Worrying time for Reed, Leadbetter
Reigning Masters champion Patrick Reed is taking lessons from veteran swing coach David Leadbetter. This news made me slip back down memory lane, of me arriving at his academy in Florida many years ago. I was just starting my career as a coach and had this idea of asking my students to sponsor me to go over, from Australia, to take some lessons from him. After much deliberation, I called my regulars who, upon hearing my anguished proposition for funds, agreed to pay upfront for several David Leadbetter inspired lessons that I would give them upon my return.
These were in the days when he was still working with Nick Faldo and was the most famous golf teacher in the world. In those days very few players had a regular coach and no one had a ‘team’ looking after their every need. My personal goal was to find out how he marketed himself. David was the first golf teacher to really make some serious money from teaching and I was determined to find out how he managed to do it. I’m not sure how Mr Reed’s longtime swing coach Kevin Kirk will take the news — especially after Reed’s comment of “Just trying to get a fresh perspective on the swing” after shooting 77-75 to miss the cut last week — an event where he’s twice finished runner-up. Reed also shot 78 in the final round of The Players. Leadbetter told reporters that, “He’s been searching a little bit, he seemed a little frustrated”, which must be the understatement, of the year, so far.
Leadbetter went on to say that he likes Reed’s golf swing and that it didn’t need “major reconstruction.” The two worked on Reed’s setup, posture and balance while also trying to shorten Reed’s swing. “He seems very happy with the progress… He likes the sensations and shots he’s seeing,” said Leadbetter, who added that he believes the WGC-Dell Match Play will be an opportune time for Reed to test what they’ve been working on in a competitive situation. With The Masters just two weeks away it must be a worrying time for golf’s iconic golf coach — and Reed…
Out of Bounds: How do I know that my youth is all spent?– Well, my “get up and go” has got up and went. But I really don’t mind when I think with a grin. Of all the grand places my “get up” has bin.
