Time to plan things ahead

As golf heads into 2019, it is interesting to envisage how a top male player puts his upcoming schedule together, and what would be his priorities. Obviously, the first tournaments you would want to write down would be the four biggest — the Masters in April, the PGA Championship in May, US Open in June and the British Open Open in Northern Ireland in July.

For example, I guess if you’re based in America you would be thinking that if you’re travelling to Northern Ireland then to include a couple of other tournaments would make sense. The next European Tour event will tee off in Abu Dhabi on Jan 16 and is one of around 48 events that will be played in roughly 30 countries around the world.

All players are aware that one important European Tour membership requirement is that you must play a minimum of four sanctioned events outside the four majors and World Golf Championships. So place yourself in the shoes of an elite top-50 player and that you wish to ensure that you stay a top-50 player.

Bearing in mind that you can basically play in what and where you like, what would be the thoughts going through your mind as you jot down your playing schedule? Ryder Cup or President Cup team position standings would be a consideration.

Bills must be paid, so to acquire at least a couple of millions by means of prize money, appearance fees and advertising revenue would have to be a goal. And how to accomplish all of this while making sure everybody is kept happy, especially your family, as you’ll need to keep that required clear golfing head, and maintain consistently the enthusiasm of competing competitively throughout the year.

Careful planning whereby, an important break ‘here or there’ should be built into your playing schedule and much thought must be invested in this. Those involved into all this decision making would have to include your manager, business adviser, coach, psychologist and wife!

Out of Bounds: If you have a spare 20 minutes, go to YouTube and watch Seve Ballesteros going through his iron practice routine on the range. I think the clip was shot at Wentworth by a camera that was by chance in the right place at the right time.
