23 Feb The secret of a truly great swing
The greatest tip I ever received was to be told by a top player to think about starting down on a slightly flatter plane. This action creates a faster club head through the ball, therefore creating more distance.
As I’ve mentioned over the years, if there is a magic swing action within our game, then this would be it. Look carefully at the initial movement of Sergio Garcia, from finishing his back swing to starting his downswing and you’ll see one of the main secrets to a great golf swing.
Now combine this with how he lags and whips through the ball and you’ll begin to see how he gets his distance. Ben Hogan used to try and swing down as flat as he could and this is the main reason that slightly built golfers are able to hit the ball so far.
The formula has to be in the movements that start the downswing. The backswing is where you wind up what power you have, and the downswing is where you release it!
Out of Bounds: The following was sent in by a golfer from New Zealand.
A Kiwi and an Aussie went fishing one afternoon and decided to have a couple of cold beers. After a while the Aussie said to the Kiwi: “If I was to sneak over to your house and made wild passionate love to your wife while you were at work, and she
got pregnant and had a baby, would that make us related?”
The Kiwi, after a great deal of thought, said: “Well, I don’t know about related, but it sure would make us even.”
