25 Aug Rory’s solution: Cut the size
Rory McIlroy’s solution to slow play that those who are not in the same league as him should not be in the field has “put the cat among the pigeons” with his fellow colleagues and those whose jobs are associated with the PGA and European Tours.
I’ve brought this up before — that there are certain players just going through the motions of teeing it up each week with no real hope of winning. They could well be accused of just trying to reach the Senior Tour or get closer to their pension payouts.
Not many will discuss this “elephant in the room” but McIlroy has forced the issue, and it will be interesting to hear if his suggestion to just have half the normal number of players playing each week will come to anything and stop the slow play problem.
The backlash that the Nothern Ireland’s star may face is that what he has said will be misconstrued and that he’s opened up a “can of worms” with the following comment — “Seriously, it’s like traffic, right? You get 156 in the field, and it’s hard to get those guys around quickly. Even last week, 70, there was no mention of pace of play, I’m in a privileged position that I can say that because I’m going to get into a field of 30 or 70. Obviously, guys that are not quite in my position would disagree with that. [But] if you want to speed up play, cut the field sizes.”
Out of Bounds: The following Dalai Lama quote sounds like it was directed at several golfers — “If you become impatient and lose your temper, then you lose the best part of the human brain and judgment of a situation. Once you are angry, almost mad with anger, then you cannot make correct decisions.”
