In memory of a fine sports editor

May I remember Edward Thangarajah, who passed away just before Christmas.

The quiet and unassuming former Bangkok Post sports editor helped me tremendously in establishing myself here in Thailand, over 20 years ago.

I pestered him with letters and phone calls in the hope that he would see the benefit of having a regular golf tip column within his sports pages.

Thankfully he did, and so began a Friday evening ritual for me.

Sending in an email to the Bangkok Post office was not even thought about in those days, and week after week I battled through horrendous traffic in

taxis or motorcycles risking, many times, ‘life and limb’ to get my transcript to him before the deadline.

His gentle encouragement, help and guidance I will never forget. Like an old schoolmaster, he would correct my terrible writing in a caring and subtle

way.

He would be the first to admit that he had a good innings at 84. I learnt much from Edward — thanks old chap.

Out of Bounds: Edward would appreciate the following words written on Billy Wilder’s gravestone: “I’m a writer, but then nobody’s perfect.”
