08 Sep Correct mechanics is key
The average swing speed of a senior golfer is between 65–75mph. But there are some senior golfers who manage to swing faster therefore defying the aches and pains of growing old. The average speed on the LPGA Tour is in the 90s and if you wish to play competitively with the top male players on our planet, you’ll need to swing that clubhead around 110+mph.
One of the most difficult issues that golfers over 50 struggle with more than younger golfers is consistency. Of course, regularly striking the sweet spot is one of the top issues affecting power and distance. Consistent ball contact is really about executing the correct mechanics.
As we discover after hours of practice, mechanics are much more difficult to execute when the body is limited by age-related factors. Many golfers struggle with this. Golfers enjoy hitting the ball beautifully one day, and spend the next frustrated wondering where their swing went.
This is one of the primary reasons golfers fail to drill down and work on mechanics. That is because, every now and again, it all comes together and they hit the ball great. They tend to believe they just need to keep practising instead of exploring the root cause of the swing problem and changing the swing.
Out of Bounds: In the golfing world the past is past — nothing can change that last round. But the future depends on the present, as we still have the opportunity to shape it. This is not a matter of employing technology or spending more money — it’s about working harder and more constructively on the range.
