02 Dec Black Mountain has stood the test of time
I returned to one of Thailand’s best golf clubs recently, and it was interesting to see how Black Mountain had weathered since its opening back in 2008.
Only a handful of Thai golf projects can claim to have produced a business model that has truly been successful and Black Mountain in Hua Hin is one of them. The whole clubhouse experience from arrival to the first tee is effortless and a pleasant one.
Yes, it’s easy to be critical of missing details but, all things considered, the club has stood the test of time extremely well, which is a testament to those who originally designed and thought hard on the working practicability of the clubhouse.
After going around the course, I could tell that this great layout is being lovingly cared for by Australian Richard Halls. Like a very good whiskey, Richard has been with Black Mountain for 12 years now, and there’s nothing that this course manager doesn’t know about his side of the golf business.
He’s overseeing well over 100 ground staff who are looking after the 27 holes. However, his expertise is not restricted to the maintenance of the course, as his ‘scope of work’ includes looking after the residential properties that now surround the fairways.
Richard’s experience allowed him to build the new nine-holes together with Swedish golfer Johan Edfors and they have both done a great job of not deviating or digressing from the flow and quality of the original 18.
At every successful golf club, you’ll find experienced and knowledgeable staff who consistently make sound decisions. Richard is one of these valuable team members who work hard behind the scenes to make your round of golf a pleasant one. Golfers, who know, realise that all golf clubs start off with some sort of business plan but will struggle without residential properties to sell, and it’s here that this project has been very successful.
There are many golf loving foreigners who are attracted to this Thai beach holiday area, and where best to invest in property than overlooking a Black Mountain manicured fairway.
Andre Bell is the new man responsible for the practice range, pitching, chipping and putting areas.
Andre is investing extensively in bringing the latest teaching equipment to Hua Hin — you name it the Black Mountain Golf Academy will have it! — and there will be no better place to work on your game than this superb practice facility.
Out of Bounds: Since joining the British PGA some 46 years ago, and subsequently through my teaching career that has taken me to nine different countries, there’s been numerous times whereby I’ve longed to say the phrase ‘Don’t call us, we’ll call you’ to those I’ve found extremely obnoxious. Yet as I look back, I pride myself on my ability of not saying this once. However, I’ve said a few times to some useless individuals ‘go take a long walk off a short pier!’
