Link courses are stunning

There are some truly wonderful courses that will be displayed on our TV screens for the next few weeks. All of the links courses will look stunning and it will be interesting to see how they stand up to the world’s best. The Irish Open is being held in Ireland, while Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland will host the 148th British Open, just as it did the 80th edition in 1951, from July 18-21. Back in 1888 the course had only nine holes and was expanded to 18 a year later.

It played host to the Irish Open in 1930, 1940, 1947 and 2012, and Amateur Championship in 1993 and 2014. From 1995-99 and in 2004, it was also the home of the [British] Senior Open Championship. Perhaps it should be noted here that Rory Mcllroy still holds the course record of 61. Graeme McDowell was born in Portrush and calls Royal Portrush his home club.

British Open winners McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington are honorary members of Royal Portrush. Lahinch Golf Club where the Irish Open is being played is apparently another links layout that any serious golfer should play before leaving this planet.

Out of Bounds: One night, Mrs McMillen answered the door to see her husband’s best friend, Paddy, standing on the doorstep. “Hello Paddy, but where is my husband? He went with you to the beer factory.” Paddy shook his head. “Ah, Mrs McMillen, there was a terrible accident at the beer factory. Your husband fell into a vat of Guinness stout and drowned.” Mrs McMillen started crying. “Oh, don’t tell me that! Did he at least go quickly?” Paddy shook his head. “Not really — he got out three times to pee!”
