Cape Wickham Links

‘Fair go cobber’ – this is how one slightly miffed Australian golfing expat here in the Land of Smiles started his email to me!

I had apparently failed to mention previously a golf course located Down Under, which is only a few months old but has recently been voted Australia’s third best golf course.

Now shut your eyes for a moment and just think of all the ‘world renowned’ spectacular golf courses there are in Oz and slowly the reality will hit you that this must be one of those courses you might (handicap and past record permitting) be able to play once ‘hopefully’ you’ve made it to heaven.

This golfing paradise is located on King Island and reachable by a short flight over from Melbourne.

By all accounts, the island’s small airport is busy with aircraft full of excited players from all over the place. Their experiences of playing this gorgeous creation are well documented, and any negative comments are as rare as a hen’s teeth!

Cape Wickham has announced itself quietly, as there’s no need for too many words, or distorted hype. Like a drop dead attractive female, it will turn heads and be the centre of discussions in many a 19th in the future.

It has initially been placed at around 24 in the world, so take my word for it — put this ‘must play’ course down on your bucket list, as it will blow your mind.

Out of Bounds: Three golfers — a Kiwi, an Englishman and an Australian — walk onto the first tee. The starter said: “Is this some kind of bloody joke?”
